Skin Cancer Warning Signs
The most worrisome sign of a skin lump is if it has atypical features or significant changes. The most effective method for self-assessment is the ABCDE rule, which helps identify the characteristics of melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

A – Asymmetry: A healthy lump (such as a common mole) is usually symmetrical. A melanoma is usually asymmetrical, meaning that if you cut it in half, the two halves are not the same size.
B – Border: The border of a benign mole is smooth and well-defined. Skin cancer lesions tend to have irregular, jagged, or poorly defined borders. C – Color: The color of a benign lesion is usually uniform. Melanoma can come in various shades of brown, black, blue, white, or red. D – Diameter: Skin cancer lesions are usually larger than 6 mm (the size of an eraser), but may be smaller at first.


E – Progress: This is a more important characteristic. Any change in size, shape, color, height, or any new symptoms (such as itching or bleeding) should be cause for concern.
Other signs not to be ignored
Sores that won’t heal: If you have a sore or scab on your skin that bleeds, turns into a boil, and doesn’t heal for several weeks, it could be a type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. Pimple-like appearance: A firm, red bump with a scab that looks like a pimple but doesn’t go away is a red flag, especially in sun-exposed areas.

If you notice a bump with any of these characteristics on your skin, it’s best to see a doctor or dermatologist immediately. Skin cancer, especially melanoma, is often more difficult to treat if diagnosed and treated early.

Regular skin self-examination is essential. Use a mirror to examine your body from head to toe, including hard-to-reach areas like your scalp and back.
