An effective, non-toxic, and versatile insecticide can be easily made at home using a few household ingredients. Since ants, spiders, mosquitoes, and moths are extremely sensitive to certain smells and textures, we combined the best natural repellents: vinegar (destroys the scent trails left by ants), dishwashing liquid (reduces surface tension and stops insects), and essential oils (act as a powerful repellent).

Recipe: All-Purpose Insect Spray

This spray is great for surfaces, window frames, doors, and corners where unwanted guests gather.

What you’ll need:

250ml water
150ml white wine vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
1 tsp mild dish soap (biodegradable is best)
Essential oils (secret weapon):

10 drops peppermint oil (ants and spiders absolutely hate it)
10 drops lavender or lemon eucalyptus oil (great for mosquitoes and moths)
Preparation and application

Mixing the oils: Step 1.
First, pour the detergent into a small container and add the essential oils. Since oil and water don’t naturally mix, the detergent acts as an emulsifier (a binder).

Mixing: Step 2.
Add the water and vinegar. Stir the mixture gently to prevent excessive foaming.

Bottle: Step 3.
Using a funnel, pour the liquid into a clean spray bottle. Shake briefly before each use!

Here’s how it works against individual pests:

Ants: Vinegar and peppermint mask the pheromone trails (scent trails) that ants use to navigate. They lose track and avoid the area.

Spiders: Spiders “sniff” and feel with their legs. The intense scent of peppermint is so unpleasant to them that they won’t cross treated barriers (such as window sills).

Mosquitoes and moths: The scent of lavender and eucalyptus blocks the olfactory receptors of these flying insects. Where lavender smells, mosquitoes don’t suspect prey and moths don’t suspect breeding grounds.

Important note: On sensitive surfaces (such as untreated wood or light-colored fabrics), test the spray in an inconspicuous area first. Because of the essential oils, do not spray it directly on pets (cats are especially sensitive to peppermint oil).
