The Legend and Purpose Behind It
Since Saint Peter was a fisherman before his calling as an apostle, popular belief holds that he descends to Earth on this particular night. He blows into the vessels of the faithful to show them his presence and to form a boat from egg white.

For farmers, this “boat” used to serve as an oracle for the harvest and the weather:

Open, full sails: These signified good weather, plenty of sunshine, and a successful harvest.

Closed or barely formed sails: These were interpreted as omens of heavy rain, storms, or a poor agricultural year.

How to prepare the boat
Preparation is incredibly simple and a fun experiment that is still enjoyed with children today.

  1. Prepare the container: On the evening of June 28th.

Take a large, transparent carafe, a large glass, or a clear glass canning jar. Fill it about three-quarters full with clear, room-temperature water.

  1. Add the egg white: Separate carefully.

Crack a fresh egg and carefully separate the egg white from the yolk. Gently and slowly let only the clear egg white slide into the water. Do not stir! The egg white will sink flat to the bottom of the container.

  1. Place the glass outside: Let it work overnight.
