Applying toothpaste to scissors is a well-known trick among seamstresses, offering two main benefits. If you thoroughly wipe off the toothpaste after about a minute, the following happens:
- Cleaning and removal of adhesive residue
Seamstresses often cut fabrics that are fixed with double-sided tape, fusible interfacing, or other adhesives. Over time, stubborn, sticky residue builds up on the blades, dulling the scissors and causing them to snag the fabric.
What happens? The surfactants and mild abrasives in the toothpaste dissolve these sticky layers within a minute. After wiping, the blade shines again and cuts cleanly without sticking to the fabric.
- Minimal Sharpening Effect (Polishing the Cutting Edge)
Toothpaste contains very fine abrasive particles (often silicates or chalk) that act like an extremely fine polishing paste.
What happens? If you carefully open and close the scissors a few times after applying toothpaste (so that the blades rub against each other) and then wipe them after a minute, microscopic irregularities and burrs on the cutting edge will be smoothed out. While this won’t make the scissors razor-sharp like they would be with a whetstone, it will minimize friction, allowing them to glide much more smoothly.
⚠️ Important note: Toothpaste contains water. After the one-minute contact time, the scissors must be completely wiped clean and thoroughly dried, otherwise the blades can quickly rust. A drop of sewing machine oil on the joint after cleaning will perfectly protect the scissors.
