Here is a popular and proven recipe for sterilized pickles without canning (so-called Milotkove uhorky). The best part is that all the ingredients are added directly to the jars. This eliminates the tedious process of boiling the brine in a large pot and the cucumbers remain wonderfully crispy.
… Ingredients (for 1 glass, 720 ml):
Cucumbers (carefully washed and scrubbed)
1 thick slice of onion
1 sprig of dill
Vinegar: 6–7 tbsp
Granulated sugar: 7 level teaspoons (can be combined with sweetener for extra crunch)
Garnish (or salt): 1 tsp (if not using garnish, add 1 tsp of salt, a few mustard seeds, 4 peppercorns and 2 allspice berries)
Cold water (tap water or boiled and cooled water)
Tip: For a better taste, you can also add 2–3 slices of carrot or a piece of horseradish.
Preparation: Wash the glasses and lids thoroughly and let them dry. Filling: Place a slice of onion and a sprig of dill at the bottom of the glass. Then, layer the washed cucumbers tightly (larger cucumbers on the bottom, smaller ones on top). Seasoning: Add the measured sugar and garnish (or salt and pepper) directly to each jar and pour over the vinegar. Filling with water: Fill with clean, cold water to about 1 cm below the rim of the jar. Sealing:
Wipe the jar necks dry and seal tightly with clean lids. Sterilization (canning): In a pot: Place the jars in a canning pot and sterilize for 20 minutes at 80–85 °C. In the microwave: Heat one closed 720 ml jar in the microwave at 700 W for about 6 minutes (for multiple jars, increase the time accordingly). After heating, turn the jar upside down on a kitchen towel and let it cool completely to make sure the lids are properly closed. Enjoy!
