There are a few golden rules that will get almost any cactus to develop a true floral display. Paradoxically, the biggest secret lies not in summer care, but in the strict winter dormancy period.
If you do the following, your cactus will bloom much more profusely in spring and summer:
- Observe strict winter dormancy (The most important trigger)
Without a winter rest period, most cacti will not form flower buds.
Keep it cool: From October to March, move the cactus to a cool location (ideally between 5°C and 12°C), for example, an unheated bedroom, a bright basement, or a stairwell.
Stop watering completely: During this time, the cactus receives virtually no water (at most a few drops every few weeks, so that the roots don’t dry out completely). The shrinking of the cactus during this phase is completely normal and desirable.
- The “Spring Awakening”
In spring (around March/April), gradually bring the cactus out of its winter dormancy:
Move it back to a warmer, very bright location.
Generate watering again carefully (initially just misting or lightly moistening the soil).
The temperature change from freezing cold to warm signals to the plant: Spring is here, time to bloom!
- Choosing the Right Fertilizer at the Right Time
Cacti need nutrients to produce their energy-intensive flowers, but conventional plant fertilizer is harmful to them.
Use special cactus fertilizer that is low in nitrogen but rich in potassium and phosphorus. Phosphorus directly promotes flowering.
Fertilize only during the growing season (approximately May to August) every 2 to 4 weeks. Do not fertilize at all during the winter.
- Never turn the cactus!
As soon as the first tiny buds appear, the cactus is extremely sensitive.
Fix the location: Do not turn the plant now. Cacti orient their buds strictly according to the light. If the pot is turned, the bud has to reorient itself – this takes so much energy from the plant that it often simply drops the buds.
Tip: Make a small mark on the pot with a pen so you always know which side should face the window.
Additional tip for summer: If possible, place your cactus outside on the balcony or patio during the summer. The natural temperature differences between hot days and cool nights greatly stimulate flowering.
