You may be expecting some expensive gadget from a teleshopping, but the truth is that the best helper to fight frost is in your hand almost every day. That miracle device is an ordinary hair dryer.

If your refrigerator or freezer resembles a polar landscape, a thick layer of ice dramatically increases electricity consumption and shortens the life of the compressor. Here’s how to use a hair dryer (and one other kitchen trick) to defrost your appliance in a fraction of the usual time:

Instead of waiting all night for the ice to melt on its own, use warm air:

Unplug the appliance from the outlet (safety first!).

Towels on the floor: Prepare for a deluge. Place old towels or a deep baking sheet under the freezer.
