Yes, in the vast majority of cases, white film can be removed, but it all depends on the cause.

These three key factors determine whether your glasses can still be saved:

Type of film (limescale vs. glass corrosion)

This is by far the most important factor. White film has two completely different causes:

Limestone (mineral deposits): This is caused by hard water or incorrect salt dosage in the dishwasher. It settles on the surface of the glass. → It can be easily removed.

Glass corrosion (glass rot): This is caused by a combination of excessively soft/softened water, high washing temperatures and aggressive cleaning agents. The structure of the glass is permanently damaged and scratched. → It cannot be removed.

Quick test: Put a little vinegar on the glass and run your finger over it. If the residue disappears or can be wiped off, it is limescale. If the glass remains dull and damp, it is, unfortunately, permanent corrosion.

Acidity of the cleaning agent (pH value)
Common dishwashing detergents or hot water are ineffective against limescale. Minerals such as calcium and magnesium require an acidic reaction:

Vinegar (acetic acid): Dilute vinegar and warm water in a 1:1 ratio, soak the glasses for 15-30 minutes, then rinse.

Citric acid: Dissolve 2-3 tablespoons of citric acid in hot water and soak the glasses in it. Citric acid does not smell as strong as vinegar and achieves excellent results.

Dishwasher prevention and settings
Even if you remove the deposits, they will reappear during the next wash cycle without adjusting the washing conditions:
Water hardness and salt: Check the water hardness and add the appropriate amount of salt to the dishwasher.
