The traditional grandma’s yellow soap (often known as laundry soap or nuclear soap) is pure nostalgia for many. It used to be a staple in every household, and although it has been replaced by modern gels and scented capsules today, its power and versatility are still unsurpassed.
If you have it at home or like to think of it, here is an overview of its best and often surprising uses:
- Remover of the most stubborn stains
Modern stain removers can sometimes hide. Yellow soap can handle grease, grass, blood, fruit juices and shirt collars. Just soak the stain, rub it with soap, let it sit for a while and throw it in the washing machine. - Protection against squeaking and stuck zippers
Zippers: If the zipper on your jacket or bag is stuck, run a dry piece of yellow soap over it. The teeth will be lubricated and the zipper will slide like butter.
Doors and drawers: Dry soap will reliably silence squeaky door hinges or help old wooden drawers slide more smoothly. - Helper in the garden against pests
If you don’t want to spray chemicals on your houseplants or vegetables, yellow soap is a great organic solution. Grate a little soap into warm water, let it dissolve, and spray the plants infested with aphids or mites with this solution. The soapy layer paralyzes the pests. - Clean windows and mirrors without fogging
If you gently rub dry soap over the bathroom mirror or glasses and then polish it with a dry microfiber cloth, you will create an invisible film that will prevent them from fogging up when showering or changing from cold to warm weather. - First aid for DIYers
Easier screwing: If you need to screw a screw into hardwood, rub the thread with soap. It will go much easier and the wood will not crack.
Cleaning your hands from car wax: If you have worked in a workshop or on a car and your hands are black with oil, yellow soap combined with a little coffee grounds (as a scrub) will remove even the most stubborn dirt from your skin.
Yellow soap was simply a brilliant universal product – without unnecessary chemicals, ecological, cheap and incredibly effective.
