Simple home remedies can help prevent fly larvae (worms) in your trash can. The goal is to keep the trash can dry, cool, and unattractive to flies.
The Most Effective Measures Against Fly Larvae
Absorb Moisture (Home Remedy): Sprinkle a layer of baking soda, cat litter, or coffee grounds at the bottom of the trash can. These substances absorb liquids and neutralize odors that attract flies.
Repel Flies (Essential Oils): Drip a few drops of lavender, eucalyptus, or peppermint oil onto a paper towel and place it on the inside of the trash can. Flies will strongly avoid these scents when laying eggs.
Wrap Organic Waste: Always wrap meat, fish, and food scraps tightly in newspaper or paper towels before throwing them in the trash. This prevents flies from even reaching the egg-laying sites.
Additional prevention tips:
Keep the lid tightly closed: Make sure the trash can is always securely closed.
No moisture in the bin: Pour out liquids or absorb them thoroughly before disposing of them.
Clean regularly: Wash the bin thoroughly with a vinegar and water solution every two weeks and let it dry completely in the sun (vinegar kills any remaining eggs).
Choose a shady spot: In summer, place the trash can in a cool, shady location to slow down rot and maggot development.
