This is a real challenge! To prove I’m not just a texter, I need your help—specifically, a photo or at least a very detailed description. Flea markets are full of treasures and curiosities, from antique medical instruments to our grandmothers’ forgotten kitchen gadgets.

Try to describe the item to me using these points:

Material: Is it made of brass, cast iron, Bakelite, or maybe bone?

Shape and size: Does it fit in the palm of your hand, or is it a heavy cast-iron machine? Does it have moving parts, handles, or gears?

Inscriptions: Does it have numbers, patents (e.g., “D.R.G.M.” or “Pat. Pend.”), manufacturer’s marks, or foreign language inscriptions?

How does it feel? Does it have a blade? Does it have holes for attaching it to a table? Does it look like something for the kitchen, the workshop, or for sewing?

Let me guess at a few things you often find at flea markets that you don’t know what to do with:

Letter sealer: A small metal roller with an engraved symbol.

Egg cracker: Looks like a pair of scissors with one eye.

Hat ruler: A strange metal contraption with many arms.

Candle snuffer: A small bell on a long stick.
