“I’ve never experienced anything like this before!” Olga exclaimed indignantly. “A woman who worked abroad for decades suddenly wants to sell her gold!”

Tamara had only recently returned. Hesitantly, she explained that she had asked her sister first because she trusted her. If Olga didn’t want the jewelry, she should simply go to a pawn shop. Nervously, she picked up her old gold pieces from the table, avoiding eye contact with her sister.

22 Years of Hard Work – and No Place in Her Life

Olga could hardly believe that something like this had happened. Tamara had worked abroad for 22 years, saving and sacrificing her life. After the early death of her husband, she had raised her two children alone and finally moved to Greece to give them a better life.

Her efforts had paid off: Her son and daughter each received a large house, built with her mother’s money. Tamara was proud, for few women could have achieved that on their own. She was convinced that her children would welcome her with open arms.

The bitter truth upon her return

But reality proved harsh. Her daughter said to her:

“Mom, why are you staying with me? Go to your son’s; he has more room.”

But she wasn’t welcome there either:

“That’s not fair, Mom. We have our own family.”

Hurt and disappointed, Tamara returned to her old family home in the village, a house that had stood empty for over 20 years and was in dire need of renovation. She had no money left. Therefore, she found it difficult to decide to sell the old gold jewelry from her youth.

Her sister’s clever plan

Olga wouldn’t let her. She offered Tamara a place to stay for a while and invited both children to dinner on Sunday. Suddenly and unexpectedly, Tamara appeared at the table.

Olga got straight to the point:

“Your mother is back and no longer has a home. But you live in the houses she built for you.”

Then came a clear message:

“Legally, everything still belongs to your mother. Either you renovate her house together, or she keeps one of your houses. The decision is yours.”

The message had gotten through. That same summer, the house was completely renovated—with running water, heating, and all the comforts of home.

What Really Matters

But Olga went even further. She made it clear to her children that it was now time to take responsibility. They would take turns caring for their mother. Without arguments.

When Tamara later tried to thank Olga with gold necklaces, Olga refused:

“Gold isn’t important anymore. The real gold is care, respect, and the feeling of belonging.”

Tamara hugged her sister with tears in her eyes. Without her, everything would have been different.
