I noticed something strange in the grass and thought it was just a rope, but when I looked closer, I screamed in horror.

I noticed something very strange in my yard. At first, I thought I saw a rope in the grass: long and twisted, as if someone had dropped it on purpose. But then it occurred to me: “What if it was a snake?!”

My heart was pounding. I quickly grabbed my phone, snapped a photo, and, fueled by adrenaline, decided to get closer. Every step was difficult: the knowledge that it could be dangerous was simply too terrifying.

But when I finally got closer and took a closer look, I was overcome with true horror…

It turned out it was neither a rope nor a snake.

A column of, I later counted, about 150 caterpillars crawled slowly in front of me! They moved in single file, tightly packed together, as if following an invisible leader.

I had no idea such a thing was possible, let alone in my own garden.

Where did they go? Why were there so many of them? These questions still haunt me. There are theories that the caterpillars’ collective movement might deter predators. Or, for example, it might make it easier to search for food.

Or perhaps they save energy this way. Those in front lead the way, and those behind have to spend less.
