Nothing is more annoying than a stuck or falling-apart zipper when you’re in a hurry. Before you throw away your jacket or call a tailor, try these tricks. Most zipper problems can be fixed at home in just a few minutes.

Here’s how to proceed, depending on the problem:

Zipper coming apart (slider no longer closes)
This is the most common problem. It’s caused by a loose slider that no longer presses the zipper teeth together properly.

Quick fix: Take a pair of pliers. Carefully squeeze the sides of the slider (left and right) together.

Caution: Squeeze gently! If you squeeze too hard, the slider will jam completely or break. One millimeter is enough to reconnect the teeth.

Stuck zipper (won’t move)
A zipper usually gets stuck due to a piece of fabric or lack of lubrication.

Kitchen First Aid: Rub the zipper teeth above and below the slider with regular soap, petroleum jelly, or lip balm.

Pencil Trick: Rub the tip (graphite) of a pencil over the teeth. The graphite acts as a dry lubricant and makes the slider glide more easily.

Fabric in the Zipper: If fabric is caught in the slider, don’t pull on it forcefully! Try gently pulling the fabric outwards and sliding the slider down (towards the beginning of the zipper).

Torried Pull (for holding the zipper):
If the pull has broken off and you have nothing to hold onto, you don’t need a new zipper.

Temporary Solution: Thread a paperclip or key ring through the eyelet of the zipper.

Ideal Solution: Use a piece of sturdy string or a leather strap and tie a neat knot.

Zipper Has Fallen Out (Zipper Open on Both Sides):
If the zipper has completely fallen out, you need to reinsert it into the tracks.

Slightly cut the zipper at the bottom between the two teeth (just the fabric part).

Reattach the zipper.

Sew the cut end with a few stitches to prevent the zipper from coming loose again (this creates a new stopper).
