Many gardeners underestimate this old practice, but it is a simple and very effective way to protect trees. Liming trunks is not just an aesthetic matter – it has several important functions that can significantly affect the health and yield of your trees.
1️⃣ Protection against bark cracking
In spring, there are large temperature fluctuations between day and night. The sun heats the dark bark during the day, while at night the temperature drops sharply. This temperature shock causes so-called frost cracks.
The white coating reflects the sun’s rays and prevents the trunk from overheating.
2️⃣ Pest prevention
A lime coating can limit overwintering pests that hide in the cracks in the bark. At the same time, it partially hinders their ascent to the tree crown.
3️⃣ Disease protection
Lime has a mild disinfectant effect. It helps reduce the incidence of some fungal diseases that attack weakened or damaged bark.
I wish you health and well-being with herbs! 🌿

4️⃣ Longer tree life
A healthy trunk means better sap flow and a stronger tree. Regular trunk protection contributes to overall vitality and stable fertility.
✅ When and how to lime?
The ideal period is the end of winter or very early spring (February – March), before strong sunny days begin.
Slaked lime mixed in water is used (you can add a little clay for better adhesion). The lower part of the trunk and the stronger skeletal branches are painted.
This may be an old trick of our grandmothers, but it still works today. It only takes a few minutes of work and the tree will repay you with healthy growth and a richer harvest. 🌿🍎
