When I was little, the smell of these rolls meant only one thing: something beautiful was happening at home. My grandmother always made them “just like that” – without a holiday, without a reason, simply because she wanted the house to be filled with a sweet aroma and good mood. And do you know what the best part is?
The dough has only three basic ingredients.
Nothing complicated, no long rising, no special procedures. Just honest housework and a few minutes in the kitchen.
🥐 What you will need
Dough (only 3 ingredients!):
200 g cream
200 g lard
400–450 g plain flour
Fillings (a classic that won’t disappoint):
Canned sour cherries
or
Poppy seed filling:
4 tablespoons ground poppy seeds
1 teaspoon sugar
3 tablespoons boiled water
To finish:
Sugar powder
🥣 How to proceed step by step
1️⃣ Prepare the dough
Put the lard and cream in a bowl – mix both well until a smooth mass is formed.
Gradually add the flour and work out a fine, soft dough that doesn’t stick.
Put it in a bag and put it in the fridge for 30 minutes – the dough will firm up nicely and roll better.
2️⃣ Dividing and shaping the rolls
Divide the dough into 3 equal parts.
Roll each into a round pancake.
Cut the pancake into triangles like a pizza. Place a cherry or a spoonful of poppy seed filling on the wider end and gently twist into a roll shape.
3️⃣ Baking
Place the rolls on a baking sheet lined with baking paper.
Bake for 25 minutes at 180 °C – just until they start to turn slightly golden.
4️⃣ Finishing
Sprinkle the still warm rolls with powdered sugar.
And that’s it!
Fragrant, fragrant, slightly sandy rolls like grandma’s.
