Christmas Butter Cookies: Simple, Fragrant, and Ideal for Long Winter Nights

Christmas has a unique atmosphere in the Czech Republic – the warmth of home, the lights in the windows, and the aroma that spreads through the kitchen. And simple butter cookies, which anyone can make, fit perfectly into this atmosphere. They are delicate, fragile, and go wonderfully with tea, coffee, and in gift boxes for family and friends.

This recipe is ideal if you want something quick, inexpensive, and tried and true. What’s more: the kids will love cutting them for the first time.

🥣 Ingredients (classic Christmas recipe)
250g all-purpose flour
150g butter at room temperature
100g sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
A pinch of salt
👩‍🍳 Preparation (for a perfectly crispy dough)
Beat the butter with the sugar until you obtain a smooth and homogeneous cream. This is the base for a perfect crispness.

Add the eggs and vanilla, mix well.

Add the flour, salt and cinnamon – if desired.

Knead a smooth dough that doesn’t stick.

Wrap it in plastic wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Roll out the dough and cut the cookies into Christmas shapes.

Bake on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Bake at 180°C for 10 to 12 minutes – until the edges are lightly golden. Let cool completely, then decorate or store.

🎄 Why does this recipe work?

The butter gives the cookies a crumbly texture and a delicate flavor.

The rested dough is easier to work with and holds its shape.

The short baking time preserves the light color and softness of the interior.

Whether for St. Nicholas Day, an Advent wreath, or as a gift, they will always bring joy. They are beautiful precisely in their simplicity.
