Caution: An electric shock is a serious medical emergency!
If you or someone else has been electrocuted, immediate action is crucial. This is a situation that requires medical attention, regardless of the cause.
Immediate measures in case of an electric shock
- Ensure safety:
Disconnect the power source immediately. Turn off the power at the fuse box or unplug the device. Do not touch the affected person while they are still in contact with the power source, as you could receive a shock yourself.
If separation is not possible, try to push the person away with a non-conductive object (e.g., a dry wooden stick or plastic broom).
- Call emergency services:
Immediately call the emergency number (112 in Germany/Austria/Switzerland).
Even if the affected person appears to be fine on the outside, they must be medically examined, as electric shocks can cause internal damage (e.g., cardiac arrhythmia, nerve or organ damage).
- Provide first aid:
Check breathing and pulse.
If the person is not breathing, immediately begin CPR (chest compressions and artificial respiration) if you are trained to do so until emergency medical personnel arrive.
Keep the affected person warm and try to calm them down.
Important information
The electric shock may have caused internal burns or heart problems that are not immediately visible. Anyone who has suffered an electric shock should be examined by medical professionals as soon as possible.
Regarding the cause: If the electric shock was caused by the intentional action of another person, it may be a criminal offense. After medical care has been provided, you should report the incident to the police.
