Design That Complicates Instead of Simplifies
Impossible-to-Open “Tamper-Resistant” Packaging: Those rigid, sealed plastics that require scissors and knives and sometimes result in cuts. The security issue is solved, but at the cost of consumer frustration and injury.
Shampoo/Conditioner Bottles with Inconvenient Lids: Designs with lids that collect water in the shower, making them difficult to open with wet or slippery hands, or that are too small and difficult to handle.
Complicated User Interfaces (UI) in Home Appliances: Washing machines, ovens, or microwaves with so many menus and buttons that a simple task becomes a digital treasure hunt to find the desired function. Ultra-Modern Design Faucets with No Obvious Control: Those faucets where you don’t know whether to pull, push, or turn, or which direction to turn on the water, or to control the temperature. Aesthetics trump intuition.
Olive Oil Bottles with Spouts That Always Spill: Spouts that are too wide, poorly designed, or don’t allow for a clean flow, always result in oil dripping down the bottle.
Revolving Doors in High-Traffic Areas: These create traffic jams and are difficult for people with reduced mobility, parents with strollers, or people with luggage. Efficient air conditioning comes at the cost of accessibility and fluidity.
Trash Cans with Openings That Are Too Small: These force users to push the trash in, potentially touching it or getting their hands dirty. Furniture with an Overly Fragile “Air Design”: Chairs or tables that are aesthetically minimalist and “lightweight,” but prove unstable, uncomfortable, or easily broken with normal use.
Clothes Hangers with Non-Functional Shapes: Hangers that are beautiful, but don’t hold clothes in place, causing them to slip and wrinkle.
Modern, but Not Sturdy/Bulky Fabric Shopping Bags: Reusable bags that are stylish, but tear easily with a little weight or take up too much space in the bag when empty.
Apps with Excessive and Uncustomizable Notifications: Apps that bombard the user with irrelevant alerts, becoming a constant source of distraction and irritation, leading to uninstallation.
Kitchen Countertops with Sharp Edges: Aesthetically sharp, but pose a constant danger to children and adults, resulting in bruises or cuts. Cell phone chargers with very short cables: Portability is great, but the lack of range makes them impractical with most outlets.
Computer keyboards without adequate tactile feedback: Ultra-flat or touch-sensitive keyboards that are difficult to use without looking at the keys, resulting in typing errors and reduced productivity.
Recycling bins/bins with poor sorting capabilities: A “compact” design with compartments so small that separating waste becomes impractical in everyday life.
Resealable food packaging that doesn’t seal: Bags of cereal, cookies, or snacks that promise to be “zip-lock” but prove ineffective, leaving the food dry or soggy. Automotive Navigation Systems with Irritating or Outdated Voices: The idea is to guide the driver, but if the voice is monotonous, irritating, or the directions are outdated, the driver is more stressed than helped.
These examples underscore the importance of user-centered design, where functionality and practical experience should always come before mere aesthetics or the pursuit of novelty. Good design, ultimately, solves problems, not creates them.
