This headline sounds promising and is frequently circulated on social media and gardening websites. Boric acid (H₃BO₃) can be beneficial for strawberries, but beware of the magic “half a teaspoon.”
Boron is an essential trace element for plants—it supports flowering, pollination, and fruit development. If strawberries lack it, the fruits can remain deformed and small.
However, the line between “beneficial” and “toxic” is very thin when it comes to boron.

Risk of poisoning: An overdose of boron can burn the plants. The leaves turn yellow from the edges inward, then brown, and the strawberry plant can die completely.
Poor solubility: Boric acid dissolves very poorly in cold water. If you don’t mix the solution thoroughly (ideally in some warm water), you risk spraying a concentrated solution on your plants, which can damage them.
Dosage is crucial: The common “miracle recipe” recommends about 1 to 2 grams (approximately half a teaspoon) of boric acid, but per 10 liters of water, not per plant! This solution is then gently sprayed onto the leaves during the flowering period and not used to water mature plants.

If you want to avoid overdosing with pure boric acid, try these methods instead:
Complex fertilizers with trace elements: Modern liquid or crystalline fertilizers specifically formulated for strawberries already contain the optimal amount of boron (and other elements like zinc or manganese). They are formulated so that they won’t harm the plant.
Lignohumate: Strengthens the root system and helps the plant better absorb nutrients already present in the soil.
Wood ash: Pure wood ash contains potassium, calcium, and trace elements that are beneficial for strawberries (simply work it lightly into the soil around the strawberry plants).
Finally, healthy strawberries with green leaves and abundant blossoms are unlikely to have a boron deficiency. For an optimal harvest, water regularly, mulch (e.g., with straw), and fertilize occasionally with a standard organic fertilizer.
