Water is key: Hydrangeas (the name hydrangea comes from the English word for “water vessel”) don’t tolerate thirst, especially on hot days. Keep the soil moist, but not wet.

Support peonies: Because peony blooms are heavy and lush, they tend to droop after rain. If you haven’t already, you should add supports or stakes so they stand upright and proud.
… The right soil: Remember that hydrangeas are the chameleons of the garden; for blooms that turn blue, the soil should be acidic (with a low pH). Peonies, on the other hand, prefer humus-rich and well-drained soil to prevent root rot.
