The reason is as simple as it is ingenious: Sugar is one of the strongest retarders for the setting process of concrete.

Imagine a concrete mixer truck is stuck in traffic or the pump on the construction site breaks down. If the concrete in the drum hardens, the truck is totaled—a loss of tens of thousands of euros.
