However, if you provide the right stimuli, they will reliably bloom for years.

Here are the 4 most important care tips to continuously encourage your orchid to form buds:

The Temperature Trick (Stimulating Blooming)
Orchids often need a signaling system from nature to know that it’s time for new flowers.

How to do it: In autumn or spring, place the plant in a slightly cooler location (around 15–18 °C) for about 2 to 3 weeks, especially at night.

Effect: This temperature difference simulates the changing of the seasons and stimulates the formation of new flower spikes.

Soaking Instead of Watering
Waterlogging is the number one enemy – rotten roots can no longer absorb nutrients to support buds.

How to do it: Don’t water from above, but instead soak the plastic pot every 7 to 10 days for about 10–15 minutes in lukewarm, low-lime water (rainwater is best).

Important: Let the water drain completely afterward. The roots should be silvery-gray before you soak them again (green roots are still moist enough).

The Right Way to Cut After Flowering
Don’t cut faded stems right down to the base too quickly.

How to do it: If the stem is still green, cut it just above the third bud (the small thickenings on the stem).

Effect: A new side shoot with fresh buds often sprouts from this bud. Only remove the stem completely when it is completely brown and dried out.

Bright, indirect light & gentle fertilization

Without sufficient energy, the plant cannot develop flowering power.

Light: An east- or west-facing window is ideal. Direct midday sun will burn the leaves, while too much shade will prevent flowering.

Fertilizer: Fertilize only during the growth and flowering phases, every 2 to 3 weeks, using special orchid fertilizer at half strength. Regular plant fertilizers are far too strong and will burn the delicate aerial roots.

Orchids (especially the popular Phalaenopsis) are often considered demanding.
