The grease soaks deep into the fabric fibers and binds there. The most important thing before the actual wash is to bind the grease and remove it from the fibers.

Step 1: Absorb the grease (for fresh stains)
Do not rub! Rubbing will only work the oil deeper into the fabric.

Gently blot up excess oil with a paper towel.

Gently sprinkle the stain with a grease-absorbing powder:

Baby powder or cornstarch/baking soda (ideal for delicate fabrics like wool or silk).

Chalk.

Let the powder sit for 10 to 15 minutes and then gently brush or blow it off.

Step 2: Pretreat the Stain
Before putting the garment in the washing machine, the remaining grease must be dissolved using surfactants.

Dish soap (Best all-rounder): Dish soap is specifically designed to dissolve grease. Apply a few drops directly to the stain, gently massage it in with your fingers, and let it sit for 10–15 minutes.

Bind soap or castile soap: Dampen the stain with lukewarm water and rub it with gall soap. After about 15 minutes, rinse thoroughly.

White spirit or rubbing alcohol (Only for robust fabrics like cotton/denim): Drip a little white cotton cloth onto a cotton cloth and dab the stain from the outside in. (Test for colorfastness on an inconspicuous area first!)

Step 3: Rinse & Wash
Briefly rinse the pretreatment with hot to lukewarm water (depending on the care label).

Immediately place the garment in the washing machine.

Select the highest temperature allowed on the care label and use your regular detergent for all-purpose or color fabrics.

Important: Do not dry the garment (neither in the air nor in a tumble dryer) until the stain has completely disappeared. Heat will permanently set grease stains in the fabric.

When it comes to oil stains, the faster you act, the better.
