These “spot the difference” pictures, where you see something completely different depending on your viewing angle—be it the famous duck or the rabbit, the young woman or the old lady, or two faces versus a vase.

From a psychological perspective, this is based on Gestalt psychology and the concept of brain dominance or unconscious perceptual filters:

What controls perception:

The desire for structure (figure-ground perception): Our brain dislikes chaos. As soon as we look at an image, our visual cortex decides in milliseconds what the “foreground” (the figure) and what the “background” are.

Experience and focus: What you see first often depends on what your brain is unconsciously conditioned to—for example, emotional signals (human faces) or organic forms (nature, animals).

Emotional state: People who are stressed often perceive details differently than those who are relaxed and focused.

Although such online tests are usually more entertaining than scientifically sound, they serve as a fascinating reminder that two people can look at the exact same image and still perceive two completely different things.

Which image did you have in mind?
