It occurs when a tiny blood vessel bursts in the hen’s ovary or oviduct during egg formation.

What the spot means – and what it doesn’t

Not a sign of fertilization: The blood spot does not mean that the egg was fertilized or that a chick has developed. Fertilized eggs are instead recognizable by a small, circular white disc (the germinal disc) on the yolk.

Completely safe to eat: Despite the spot, the egg is perfectly safe to eat and hygienically sound. If you find the sight visually bothersome, you can simply remove the blood spot with the tip of a knife or spoon.

A completely natural phenomenon: Blood spots occur in about 1% of all chicken eggs. They are rarely found in supermarkets because eggs are candled before packaging and any that are not candied are removed. They occur somewhat more frequently in dark eggshells or fresh farm eggs, as dark shells are more difficult to see through with a candle.

Occasionally, brownish particles also appear in the egg white – these are so-called tissue spots (meat spots), which are equally harmless.

The red spot in the egg yolk is a blood spot.
