This is the classic windowsill rivalry! And while you’re absolutely right that watering is half the battle with orchids (mostly Phalaenopsis), your neighbor’s magnificent blooms are often the result of a combination of factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orchids are little divas \u2013 they make it very clear when something is right (or not). Let’s take a look at what else might be at play besides just water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The Watering Secret: Less is almost always more
    You’re absolutely right, watering is the most common mistake. Orchids hate “wet feet.” In nature, they grow as epiphytes (air plants) on trees, their roots essentially hanging in the air.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The soaking method: Many orchid experts don’t water at all, but instead soak the inner pot in lukewarm water every 1\u20132 weeks for about 10 minutes. Afterward, let it drain well! Water should never remain in the outer pot, otherwise the roots will rot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The root check: Examine the roots in the clear plastic pot:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Silver-gray\/white: The plant is thirsty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. The often overlooked factor: Light
      Even with the perfect watering technique, an orchid won’t bloom profusely without the right light. For bud formation, it needs a great deal of bright, but indirect light.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      The perfect window: East- or west-facing windows are ideal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The danger: In summer, the leaves will burn at a south-facing window (recognizable by yellow or black spots). North-facing windows are often too dark for abundant flowering. Perhaps your neighbor simply caught a lucky break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. The Secret Fuel: Fertilizer
        Water alone provides orchids with hardly any nutrients, especially since they’re planted in bark substrate rather than regular potting soil. If your neighbor has such impressive blooms, she’s most likely feeding her plant.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        How? Use a special orchid fertilizer (in a weak dose) during the growing season (spring to autumn) about every second or third watering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Important: Never fertilize a completely dried-out orchid; this will burn the roots. Always moisten them slightly beforehand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. The Temperature Trick (The Bloom Stimulus)
          Sometimes an orchid grows beautifully, develops gorgeous green leaves, but stubbornly refuses to produce new flower spikes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          The trick: Orchids often need a slight temperature stimulus to trigger bud formation. If your plant is kept slightly cooler at night for a few weeks (around 15\u201316 \u00b0C, for example, in the bedroom or through a slightly open window in autumn), this will encourage it to bloom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
