Even though TikTok and Instagram videos often claim that Coke can make yellowed or dull headlights look like new in no time, the reality is unfortunately quite different:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The myth: Why it looks so good in videos
In theory, the trick uses the phosphoric acid in Coca-Cola. Acid can indeed temporarily dissolve surface dirt, rust, and light oxidation. When you then wipe off the wet Coke, the headlight in the video initially looks clean and shiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reality: Why it’s a bad idea
The sticky effect: Coke is full of sugar. If you pour it on the headlights, it leaves an extremely sticky film. This attracts dust, pollen, and dirt like a magnet. After just a short drive, your headlights will be dirtier than before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Damage to paint and seals: If the sugary acid runs down the headlights, it can damage the car’s paint or make the rubber seals around the headlights porous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No long-term effect: The clouding of modern headlights is caused by UV radiation, which damages the plastic (polycarbonate) at minute intervals. Cola can’t fix that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What really works instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If your headlights are cloudy or yellowed, there are two much better methods:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Toothpaste (The real life hack): Regular white toothpaste contains very fine abrasives. Rub the headlights with a little toothpaste and a microfiber cloth in circular motions and rinse them with clean water. This actually polishes away the dull layer gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Headlight restoration kit: Available for a small price at hardware stores or online. These kits contain fine sandpaper, polish, and\u2014very importantly\u2014a UV-protective lacquer. Without this protective coating, the headlights will yellow again after just a few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
