After miracle home remedies for insects and the magic spoon for tomato plants, the internet is now promising us the “ingenious solution” for broken LED bulbs.

Let’s get straight to the point: An LED bulb whose electronics or LEDs are irreparably damaged cannot be magically repaired to suddenly save electricity, nor will a DIY trick “spruce up” your home. However, behind this viral trend, there are usually one of two real reasons – either a rather dangerous DIY repair trick or a creative upcycling idea. Let’s look at what’s really going on:

Background 1: The Dangerous “Repair Trick” (Bridging)

Many of these videos show how to open a defective LED bulb, supposedly to “save” it.

How the trick works: Inside, LED bulbs consist of a chain of many small LED chips. Often, only one of these chips burns out (recognizable by a tiny black dot). In the videos, this defective chip is simply bridged with a soldering iron or even aluminum foil and tape so that the circuit is closed again and the bulb lights up.

Why this isn’t a brilliant solution: This is extremely dangerous. If you bridge an LED in a series circuit, the voltage across the remaining LEDs increases. This causes the bulb to overheat, the remaining diodes will also burn out within a very short time, and in the worst-case scenario, there is a risk of fire. Furthermore, you’re working with mains voltage (230 volts) – novices should absolutely keep their hands off this!

Background 2: Upcycling (Decoration instead of lighting)

If the video is more serious, it’s usually not about making the bulb light up again, but rather about reusing the casing as a decorative object (upcycling).

Mini vases or planters: With older LED or incandescent bulbs, the base is carefully removed, the inside is hollowed out, and the glass dome is used as a tiny hanging vase for cuttings of houseplants.

Creative decorative objects: The bulbs are filled with glitter, small figurines, or battery-operated LED string lights to create a cozy vintage decoration.

This might enhance the look of a room, but it has absolutely nothing to do with “saving on energy costs.”
…
Background 2:
How to Really Save Money on LED Bulbs
To reduce energy costs and protect the environment, these simple facts will help instead of DIY experiments:

Use the warranty: Good LED bulbs often have a lifespan of 15,000 to 50,000 hours. If they break down much sooner, the problem is usually with the integrated driver (ballast). Many manufacturers offer warranties for several years – keep your receipt!

Pay attention to quality: Cheap LEDs may save you money on the purchase price, but they overheat more quickly and break down sooner. Brand-name LEDs have better heat management and last many times longer.

Dispose of them properly: Defective LED bulbs should never be thrown in the regular trash. They contain valuable electronic components and must be taken to a recycling center or to stores with collection boxes. This is the only way they can be recycled

And here it is again – the next sensational clickbait headline!
