I know these kinds of internet headlines all too well \u2013 they sound like an absolute miracle, and you just want to run out into the garden right away! But the truth is: promises like “permanent” and “instant” should be taken with a grain of salt when it comes to wasps. Wasps are incredibly persistent and have their purpose in the garden (they hunt annoying insects).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But if you’re referring to the popular internet trick, I bet it’s one of these three:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Artificial wasp nest (paper bag)
Wasps are very territorial and don’t like to build a nest where there’s already one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trick: Blow up a regular brown paper bag (or crochet a nest model out of gray yarn) and hang it under a pergola or on a tree. Does it work? As a preventative measure in spring, the queen wasp might change her mind and find a new home after all. However, if there is already a wasp nest in your garden, the hung-up sachets will be ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Burn coffee grounds
Wasps (and mosquitoes) hate strong smoke and intense smells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tip: Put dry coffee grounds (or ground coffee) in a fireproof bowl and light it. The coffee will begin to smolder and give off a strong aroma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Does this work? Yes, but only temporarily. It reliably keeps wasps away from the table while you eat, but it doesn’t make them disappear from the garden permanently. As soon as the coffee is burned, they’ll be back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Spray with essential oils (mint, clove, eucalyptus)
Insects have an extremely sensitive sense of smell and hate certain odors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tip: Mix water with a few drops of peppermint or clove oil and spray areas where wasps like to congregate (window frames, underlayment). Does it work?
