This is absolutely correct – and a topic that is unfortunately all too often underestimated. At first glance, it sounds so practical: You come home in the evening, insert the key in the lock from the inside, so that it is easily available the next morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In reality, however, you are creating a significant security risk and potential problems with your insurance company. Here are the main reasons why this is a serious mistake:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An invitation for thieves (“push-through trick”)
Many believe that a key left in the lock from the inside blocks the lock and leaves no chance for thieves from the outside. Often, the opposite is true.
The trick: Criminals use simple tools (such as special wires, fishing tackle or a classic hole through a mailbox) to turn the inside key from the outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Problem: If the key is already perfectly in the lock, you are doing half the work for the thief. He doesn’t have to laboriously open the lock, but simply turns the existing key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The problem with the “emergency function”
Some modern locks have a so-called emergency and dangerous function (also known as the BSZ function). This function allows the lock to be opened from the outside, even if the key is inserted from the inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If your lock does not have this function, in the event of an emergency (e.g. fire or medical emergency), you will be effectively locked out by emergency services or family members who have a spare key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If your lock has this function, turning the key from the outside, as described above, often makes it even easier for thieves to gain access, as the lock responds to turning movements from both sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Negligence and loss of insurance coverage
If a break-in actually occurs and the police discover that the key was inserted from the inside, this can have serious consequences – financially.
Gross negligence: In the event of an insurance claim, insurance companies investigate very carefully how a break-in occurred. Leaving the key in the lock can be considered gross negligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Consequence: The insurance company can drastically reduce the payment or, in the worst case, refuse it altogether because you have made the work of the perpetrators much easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Safe alternative<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is best to establish a new routine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lock the door completely twice in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Remove the key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Place it in a solid, safe place near the door (e.g. on a key rack or in a drawer), but not visible or accessible from the outside (through the mailbox or glass panels).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
