This is about one of the most common\u2014and frankly, fascinating\u2014regulars in our homes: the silverfish (Lepisma saccharinum).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If this small, agile, silvery creature is running around your bathroom or kitchen, there’s no need to panic, but it’s an important message from your home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What the silverfish is telling you:
Silverfish are like tiny, living hygrometers. Their appearance will tell you two things about the room where you find them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The humidity is too high: Silverfish love tropical conditions. They only really thrive in humidity around 70% to 80%, and they need warmth. If you see a lot of them, it’s a clear sign of stagnant, damp air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are hidden food sources: These creatures feed on starch, sugar and carbohydrates. This means that their diet includes skin flakes, hair, crumbs, but also bookbinding glue, wallpaper paste and mold spores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u26a0\ufe0f Warning sign: If fish lice suddenly appear in large numbers, even in bedrooms or living rooms, this could be a hidden warning sign of mold growth or even undetected water damage to the walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The good news: They are beneficial!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although the initial disgust factor is high, fish lice are not pests in the traditional sense of the word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They do not transmit diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They do not bite or sting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They are extremely beneficial because they eat mites and, of course, harmful mold spores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What can you do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You do not have to resort to harsh chemicals to eliminate the fish’s food source. Usually, changing the indoor climate is enough:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ventilate properly: Ventilate by opening windows wide or creating a cross-breeze several times a day for 5-10 minutes (especially after showering or cooking) to remove moisture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Heating: Keep rooms at a constant temperature, as warm air retains moisture better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Drying: Wipe wet bathroom tiles dry immediately after showering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sealing grout: Silverfish hide in cracks and loose wallpaper during the day. Sealing these areas eliminates their habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
