The end of June is a crucial turning point for garlic (especially for winter garlic planted in the fall).

As soon as the plant stops growing leaves and puts its energy into forming the underground heads, its care requirements also change.

Here are three important things to keep in mind now:

Drastically reduce watering
Before: Garlic needs regular moisture for leaf growth until June.

Now: From the end of June/beginning of July, you should almost completely stop watering. Too much moisture at this stage causes the protective outer skins of the bulbs to rot, which drastically reduces their storage life.

Stop fertilizing
Any additional nitrogen now would only encourage the plant to produce green leaves again instead of putting its energy into the cloves. Furthermore, fertilizing later makes the bulbs susceptible to disease.

Remove Garlic Scapes

If you are growing hardneck garlic (snake garlic), the plant will now produce strong, curled flower stalks.

Tip: Cut or break these stalks off as soon as they begin to curl. If you leave the flowers on, the plant will use up to 30% of its energy for seed production—energy that will then be lacking for bulb size. (Bonus: The cut garlic stalks are edible and taste delicious in a pan or as pesto!)
When to harvest?

Keep an eye on the foliage: When about a third to half of the leaves have turned yellow and dry from the bottom up (usually between mid- and late July), it’s the perfect time to harvest.

That’s absolutely right!
