Tips from agronomists.

Wood ash is a true treasure for garlic. Agronomists consider it one of the best natural fertilizers for bulb vegetables. It contains plenty of potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus—precisely the minerals garlic needs to form large, strong, and healthy bulbs with a long shelf life.

However, to ensure the ash benefits the garlic and doesn’t burn it, you must follow specific agronomic rules when selecting and applying it.

Golden rule: Which ash is the right one?

Use only pure wood ash from untreated wood (ideally from deciduous trees such as oak, beech, or birch, as these have the highest mineral content).

Never use ash from painted wood, particleboard, coal briquettes, or printed paper. These contain heavy metals and toxins that the garlic would absorb.

Right Time and Application Methods
Agronomists recommend applying ash during the growing season in two ways: dry and as fertilizer.

Method A: Dry Spreading (Spring)
As soon as the garlic begins to grow vigorously in spring (around April), the ash can be spread directly between the rows.

Dosage: Approximately 1 to 2 handfuls of ash per square meter.

Procedure: Lightly work the ash into the top layer of soil (hoe) and water the bed. The ash also acts as an excellent mechanical barrier against pests such as bugs and slugs.

Method B: Liquid Fertilization (May/Early June) Liquid fertilization is most effective during the period when the garlic is forming its own bulbs (late spring). This allows the nutrients to reach the roots directly.

Agronomic watering recipe: Add 1 to 1.5 glasses (approx. 100–150 g) of sifted ash to 10 liters of water. Stir well and let stand for 24 hours.

Application: Pour the solution directly onto the roots, ideally on already moistened soil (e.g., after rain) to avoid growth shock.

Wood ash is a true treasure for garlic.
