Few people know that it’s best not to kill them!

If you’re talking about large, conspicuous beetles like stag beetles, rhinoceros beetles, or various ground beetles, you’re absolutely right—don’t kill them!

Many people panic when they discover a large beetle or a fat larva in their compost. However, most of them are completely harmless or even beneficial to your garden.

Here’s an overview of why you should leave them alive and what you can do with them.

Find out which insects you’re lucky to have
Pests are often mistaken for beneficial insects. Find out who’s who:
Larvae in the Compost: Goldenrod vs. Beetles
Many people panic when they come across giant white larvae (slug larvae) while turning over their compost.

Goldilocks (Beneficial): Their larvae live exclusively in compost or rotting wood. They feed on dead organic material and contribute to humus formation. They do not harm plants.

Beetles (Potential Pest): Their larvae live in ordinary soil and flower beds, where they feed on plant roots. They are rarely found in compost.

Tip: If you place a beetle on a flat surface and it rolls onto its back and crawls away, it is a beneficial goldilock. Beetles usually crawl on their side or belly.

Adult Beetles: Rhinoceros Beetles and Stag Beetles
If you find a rhinoceros beetle or a stag beetle on your property, you are very lucky. These are protected, endangered, and absolutely fascinating creatures.

Adult beetles eat almost nothing (they feed exclusively on tree sap).

Their larvae live for several years in rotting tree stumps or old wood chips and do not harm the garden.

Woodlice: Beneficial insects of the night
Large, often shiny, metallic, or black beetles that scurry quickly across the ground.

Their function: They are pure predators. At night, they hunt slugs, caterpillars, and other pests that you don’t want in your garden.

What to do if you find them in your garden?

Step 1: No chemicals
By avoiding broad-spectrum insecticides, you can save hundreds of beneficial insects. Chemicals don’t distinguish between pests and helpers.

Step 2: Relocate them (if necessary)
If you find woodlouse spawn in your compost, leave it there. They are your constant helpers.

If you find large beetles (stag beetles, rhinoceros beetles) in a place where there is a risk of someone stepping on them, carefully place them on an old tree trunk, a rootstock, or in dense bushes.

Step 3: Create a quiet corner for them

Modern gardens are often too tidy, causing beetles to lose their habitat. Try offering the following in a sheltered corner of your garden:

A pile of old branches or a rotting tree stump.

Some unmowed grass.

A larger pile of bark mulch or wood chips.

In summary: Large beetles are a rarity in today’s landscape. If you like them, it’s a sign that your garden is healthy and clean. Instead of killing them, take a picture of them—most of them are among the jewels of our natural world!

If you’re talking about large, conspicuous beetles like stag beetles, rhinoceros beetles, or various ground beetles, you’re absolutely right—don’t kill them!
