Celery has a long growing season and is quite demanding. However, old gardening wisdom hides a few ingenious tricks that will guarantee you huge bulbs.

Here are the best “golden tips” from experienced gardeners:

The digging trick (the most important tip!)
As soon as the celery starts to form a bulb in the summer (around July/August), experienced gardeners carefully dig it up.

Why it works: The bulb should not be completely buried. By partially uncovering it, sunlight and air promote its lateral growth and prevent the celery from producing too many leaves.

Regularly removing side roots
This step requires a bit of courage, but it is extremely effective. If you remove the soil in step 1, you will see that there are fine roots growing on the top and sides of the bulb.

Procedure: Carefully cut off these upper side roots with a sharp knife. Leave only the main roots on the bottom, which extend deep into the soil. This way, the celery no longer wastes energy on the fine root hairs on the top and can significantly enlarge the bulb itself.

Removing the lower leaves
Celery needs leaves for photosynthesis, but too much of anything is harmful. If the plant has large tufts of leaves, the bulb will remain small.

Procedure: Throughout the summer, remove the outer, lower leaves that fall off or turn yellow. Always leave only healthy, upright leaves in the center (heart). This forces the plant to direct its energy into the roots.

Celery is a “hungry eater”: Proper fertilization without chlorine
Celery is very demanding on nutrients (it belongs to the so-called “first line” of nutrient requirements). It needs plenty of organic matter, but be careful: it does not tolerate fresh manure or chlorine.

How to fertilize it: Mature compost is ideal. Gardeners should avoid watering with fermented nettle tea (soybean infusion) during the growing season.

The secret to big onions: Celery needs boron. A lack of boron causes the bulbs to turn black and rot from the inside out. Therefore, fertilize it occasionally with a mixture of dissolved borax or a special fertilizer containing boron.

Never let it dry out. Celery comes from marshy areas. Its root system is shallow, so the growth of the bulbs stops immediately as soon as the soil dries out.

Tip: Water generously and regularly, ideally directly at the roots, not on the leaves. Mulching (e.g. with grass clippings) is very useful, as it keeps the soil around the celery moist and cool.

📌 Seasonal overview: Water generously + add plenty of compost + dig up the bulbs and cut off the lateral roots = this way you can guarantee a celery harvest in the fall that will be as big as a human head.

Are you growing celery in a bed for the first time, or are you already struggling with a specific problem, such as small or hollow bulbs?

Growing large, firm and healthy celery without cavities is a real art for every gardener.
