Five times the yield “instantly” in May from just one magical tablespoon – it sounds too good to be true. And unfortunately, it is.

Peppers are very voracious and in May (when they are usually just planted in the garden or large containers) they need one thing above all: time, warmth and a solid foundation. There is no powder in the world that will magically develop a plant in May.

Let’s bust the myth and see what’s really behind this “one tablespoon” trick and what your peppers really need in May:

What’s usually behind the “one tablespoon trick”?

Behind such videos, there are usually three well-known home remedies that are added to the planting hole in May. While they are useful, they don’t work miracles:

1 tbsp ground coffee: Provides nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Good for growth, but not an overstimulation. (Too much ground coffee also makes the soil too acidic.)

1 tbsp rock dust: Provides important trace elements and minerals (such as magnesium and iron). Very healthy for soil structure, but works extremely slowly.

1 tbsp Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate): Helps against yellowing of leaves, but should only be used in cases of acute magnesium deficiency; otherwise it damages the roots.

What peppers REALLY need in May (real steps):
Instead of hoping for an instant miracle, this May routine will actually lead to a bountiful harvest:

Wait until after the frost: Peppers hate the cold. They shouldn’t be moved outside permanently until mid-May, when nighttime temperatures are consistently above 50°F.

Slow-release fertilizer instead of the hype around the spoon: Peppers need a deep, nutrient-rich bed. Mix a good portion of well-rotted compost or a handful of horn shavings (as a slow-release organic fertilizer) into the soil when planting. This will nourish the plant for weeks, not just five minutes.

Remove the “royal flower”: This is a real tip for a bigger harvest! Carefully remove the very first flower that forms on the first branch of the main stem. This will break the gardener’s heart, but it will force the plant to put its energy into growing roots and leaves first. The result: many more flowers and fruits later.

Heat from below: Peppers love warm roots. A layer of mulch made from grass clippings will keep the soil moist and warm.

In short: Forget about “immediate harvest”. Give your peppers a good compost base in May, keep them warm, remove the royal bloom – and you will be rewarded with a great harvest at the end of summer, without any magic required.

Are you currently planning to plant peppers outside or in pots on the balcony?

Those YouTube thumbnails and clickbait headlines have done their job again!
