Throw this on the floor: They’ll disappear in seconds.

This sounds like a classic “life hack” title, the kind you often find on social media. It usually refers to a home remedy that emits a strong odor that spiders absolutely can’t stand.

The scientific basis behind it: Spiders “smell” or “taste” with their legs via chemical receptors (sensilla). Certain essential oils overstimulate these receptors, causing the animals to flee.

Here are the substances most often meant when someone says, “Throw this on the floor”:

Mint (peppermint oil)

This is the classic. Spiders hate the intense menthol smell.

Application: Mix a few drops of peppermint oil with water and spray it in the corners, or place cotton balls soaked in the oil on the floor.

Lavender
What has a calming effect on us is a chemical warning signal for spiders.

Application: Sprinkle dried lavender blossoms or lavender oil on windowsills or behind furniture.

Citrus fruits (lemon or orange peels)
Spiders are sensitive to the acid and oils in the peel.

Application: Rub a slice of lemon along baseboards and door frames.

What science says about it

However, a little “reality check” is necessary here:

Not a miracle cure: The idea that spiders leave a room “in seconds” is usually an exaggeration. It works more as a preventative measure: A spider won’t settle where it smells strongly of mint. A spider that’s already behind the wardrobe won’t panic and run out of the house just because you scatter some mint.

Volatile: Essential oils evaporate quickly. For it to be effective, you would have to repeat the procedure almost daily.

The Gentle Alternative

If you spot a spider and want to get rid of it without chemicals or home remedies:

Glass and cardboard: The safest method for both humans and animals.

Spider catchers: There are grasping arms with soft bristles that leave the spider unharmed.

Did you know? Spiders in the house are actually a compliment to your indoor climate. They settle where it’s neither too humid nor too dry – and they also eat mosquitoes, flies, and silverfish. So they’re a free, biological form of pest control!

This sounds like a classic “life hack” title, the kind you often find on social media.
