It does seem paradoxical at first glance – after all, salt is abrasive and more commonly known as an abrasive or for use in dishwashers, while laundry detergent is supposed to be gentle and clean.

But there’s actually a pretty sound (chemical) logic behind this mixture. Here’s why many people are throwing kitchen salt into the washing machine drum:

Why the mixture works
The “color-lock” effect: Salt (sodium chloride) helps to fix dyes in the fibers. Especially with new jeans or dark clothing, a pinch of salt in the wash cycle can prevent the colors from bleeding. It acts like a mordant.

Water softening: In regions with very hard water, salt supports the detergent. It helps bind calcium and magnesium ions, allowing the detergent to foam more efficiently and leaving laundry less stiff.

Against graying: Salt helps dissolve detergent residue and limescale deposits that cause white laundry to turn gray over time. It’s essentially a natural brightener without harsh bleach.

Stain removal: When used as a pretreatment, the fine grains act like a gentle exfoliant for stubborn stains (e.g., red wine or sweat) without immediately damaging the structure of delicate fabrics.

But be careful: The dose makes the poison.

Don’t overdo it. Too much salt can damage the rubber seals of the washing machine over time or be too abrasive for very delicate fabrics like silk. A tablespoon added directly to the wash is usually sufficient.

Be honest: Are you more the type who relies on tried-and-tested home remedies like salt and vinegar, or do you prefer modern chemicals in a bottle?

This sounds like one of those classic “household hacks” currently making the rounds online.
