What you\u2019re seeing are most likely the larvae of the <strong>Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD)<\/strong>, a type of fruit fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is the lowdown on your new little roommates and why they decided to crash your snack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are they?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike common fruit flies that only lay eggs on overripe or rotting fruit, the <strong>Spotted Wing Drosophila<\/strong> uses a saw-like organ to lay eggs inside fresh, ripening fruit while it&#8217;s still on the vine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The &#8220;Wrigglers&#8221;:<\/strong> They are tiny, translucent white maggots.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Salt Water Trick:<\/strong> Soaking the berries in a solution of salt and water irritates the larvae, causing them to crawl out of the fruit to find oxygen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are they dangerous?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The short answer: No.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the &#8220;yuck factor&#8221; is high, they are not known to carry diseases that affect humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Accidental Ingestion:<\/strong> If you\u2019ve eaten strawberries from the store or a farm before without soaking them, you have almost certainly eaten these larvae without realizing it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nutrient Boost:<\/strong> Extra protein?
