Although it looks like a brilliant recycling trick in the video, as your tech buddy I have to raise my finger of warning. Let’s break down how it works, why it’s tempting, but also why it’s actually a dangerous idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What’s the “trick”?
An LED bulb is made up of multiple small diodes connected in series (like Christmas lights). When one burns out, the circuit is broken and the entire bulb goes out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People remove the plastic cover.
They find the diode with the black dot (the burnt-out one).
They peel it off and connect the spot with a piece of wire or a drop of solder.
The circuit is closed and the bulb lights up again.
Why it’s (mostly) not a good idea:
Increased voltage: The electronics inside the bulb (driver) are set to a certain number of diodes. When you remove one, the remaining diodes have to handle a higher voltage than they are designed for. The result? The other diodes burn out very quickly, one after the other.
Risk of fire and injury: Home repair disrupts the thermal stability of the bulb. The diodes start to overheat and the cheap plastic components can start to melt or smolder. Not to mention that you are working with a device under 230 V voltage.
Light quality: A “repaired” bulb often flashes unpleasantly (stroboscopic effect), which tires the eyes and can cause headaches.
What to do with a broken bulb instead of a “repair”?
If the bulb is mechanically damaged (cracked plastic) but still lights up, you can use it in a workshop (if there are no exposed wires). If it doesn’t light up, the wisest way is to recycle it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
LED bulbs don’t belong in the regular trash, they contain electronics and metals.
