Optical illusions and visual puzzles are a fascinating way to test how our brain processes information, especially when it is “busy” or tired.

Here is one of the classic and very effective illusions. Look carefully at the image below:

Challenge:
Which of these two horizontal lines is longer?

The top one (with arrows pointing inwards)?

Or the bottom one (with arrows pointing outwards)?

Solution and explanation:
Our brain immediately tells us that the bottom line is longer. It is so convincing that it is hard to believe otherwise.

Fact: Both horizontal lines are exactly the same length.

Why does the brain fool us? This is the famous Müller-Lyer illusion. Our brains are used to interpreting visual stimuli in the context of a three-dimensional world.

The top line (with arrows pointing inwards) reminds us of the outside corner of the building, which is closer to us.
The bottom line (with arrows pointing outwards) reminds us of the inside corner of the room, which is further away from us.

Because the brain “knows” that the inside corner must be longer than the outside corner in order for them to appear the same on the retina, it “calculates” the perceived length and presents the bottom line as longer. This is a shortcut the brain uses to understand depth and space, but in this 2D case, it fails.

What a great challenge!
