It’s more than just a cosmetic detail! Here’s more about its origin and how you can use it.

That’s right! This little pocket, also known today as the “fifth pocket,” is a fascinating piece of history that has remained virtually unchanged for over 150 years.

Originally, it wasn’t meant for coins or a lighter, although those are its most common uses today.

True Origin: Pocket Watch Pocket
Jeans were originally workwear for cowboys, miners, and laborers. Back then (around 1873, when Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis patented jeans), men didn’t wear wristwatches, but pocket watches.

Why there? Watches were fragile and expensive. This small, snug pocket held them securely in place, preventing them from falling out or getting scratched during strenuous physical work.

How can you use it today?

Although pocket watches are almost never worn with jeans, this pocket is surprisingly practical for small items you don’t want to rummage through deep trouser pockets:

Lighter: Fits perfectly (almost made for a Zippo).

Lip balm: An ideal place to store lip balm in the summer, where it won’t run out as quickly as in a tight, large thigh pocket.

Headphones (AirPods): The headphones themselves or smaller charging cases fit perfectly.

Coins or a shopping cart token: The most classic modern use.

Rings or small jewelry: In case you need to briefly put them down at the gym or at work. Interesting fact about the rivets:

Have you noticed the small copper rivets on the corners of the pockets? They aren’t decorative; they prevent the fabric from tearing in high-wear areas. Originally, they were attached to the small pocket, but later they were removed from the back pockets because workers were scratching seats and chairs with them.

Do you own a special pair of jeans where you thought the pocket was just a passing fad? If you wish, I can create a picture of a stylish retro pair of jeans with this characteristic pocket detail.

That’s right!
