You can make so many great things with them; they’re incredibly valuable! A lemon isn’t just a fruit, it’s practically an eco-friendly Swiss Army knife for the home.

Even though the internet often promises “miracles,” the citric acid and essential oils in the peel are actually very effective. Here are the best methods that really work:

Natural All-Purpose Cleaner (my favorite)
Instead of expensive chemicals, you can make your own spray that smells like freshly picked lemons.

Here’s how: Squeeze lemon peels into a jam jar and cover them with white vinegar. Let it infuse for two weeks in a dark place.

Result: Strain the liquid and dilute it with water (1:1 ratio). It’s an excellent degreaser and cleaner for windows and countertops.

Clean your microwave without scrubbing
Dried-on food residue in the microwave is a nightmare.

Tip: Put squeezed lemons in a bowl of water and microwave on full power for 3–5 minutes.

Here’s how it works: The acidic steam dissolves all the grease. Simply wipe the microwave with a cloth afterward. It will look like new.

Save your kettle
Do you have white deposits (limescale) in your kettle?

How to do it: Put squeezed lemons in the kettle, fill it with water, and bring it to a boil. Then pour out the water and rinse the kettle. The citric acid dissolves the limescale without the aftertaste of chemical descalers.

What else can you do with lemons? (Quick tips)

What would you like to improve? How about lemons?
Odor in the refrigerator: Place half a squeezed lemon in the refrigerator. It absorbs odors. Dirty cutting board: Sprinkle a wooden board with salt and rub it with lemon zest. It disinfects and brightens.

Trash smells: Place a few lemon zest strips at the bottom of the trash can before putting in a garbage bag.

A little tip: Lemons are great, but they shouldn’t be used on marble or granite countertops. The acid can irreparably damage the surface (and leave unsightly stains).

My tip: If you’ve squeezed a lot of lemons at once, grate the zest (just the yellow part) and freeze it. It’s delicious in cakes or fish.

Want to know how to make a homemade lemon zest hand scrub that removes the smell of onions or garlic from your hands?

I completely agree – throwing away lemon peels is such a waste!
