Combined with the antioxidants in coffee, this is considered an old home remedy for an oncoming cold.

Neutralizing acidity: Similar to a pinch of salt, a tiny piece of garlic can help reduce the bitterness and acidity of coffee, making it easier on the stomach.

Vitality: In some cultures, this mixture is valued as a natural pick-me-up and metabolism booster.

The right way to use it (so it remains enjoyable):

Nobody wants coffee that tastes like garlic bread. This is how our grandparents usually did it:

Don’t press: The clove isn’t crushed or chopped.

Whole clove: Place a peeled, whole clove in the hot coffee for about 2 to 3 minutes.

Remove: Then remove the clove. The goal is to subtly infuse the essential oils without overpowering the flavor.

A modern twist: This trick is often combined with honey or cinnamon today to round out the flavor and enhance the antibacterial effect.

A little tip for friends: While it may be healthy, this trick might not be the best choice for a first date or an important meeting at the office because of the breath!

Did you know that there are similar traditions using butter (Bulletproof Coffee) or salt to alter the flavor? Shall I explain how these alternatives work?

At first glance, this might sound like a bad joke or a kitchen mishap, but there’s actually more to this “grandma’s trick” than just a spirit of experimentation.
