There are a few “guaranteed” tricks from the internet, but let’s face it – not all of them work as promised in the TikTok video.

Let’s take a look at the most popular ones and honestly tell you which one will really save your nerves in the kitchen.

The “Two Bowls” Method (Winner for Large Quantity)
This trick promises to peel an entire head of garlic in 20 seconds.

Procedure: Break the head of garlic into cloves, put them in a metal or glass bowl, cover with a second identical bowl and shake vigorously for at least 15–20 seconds.
Verdict: IT WORKS, but with a condition. The garlic must be well dried. If it is fresh or damp, the peel will stick like nails. Also, be prepared for a lot of noise!

The “Flat Knife” Method (A Chef’s Classic)
The fastest way if you need 2–3 cloves.

Procedure: Place the clove on a board, place the flat side of a wide knife on it and gently hit it with your fist. The peel will crack and the clove will literally pop out of it.
Verdict: THE MOST RELIABLE. It is fast, clean and you have the garlic ready to chop right away.

Hot Water (For Clean Hands)
A lesser-known trick that is surprisingly effective.

Procedure: Pour hot (not boiling) water over the cloves for 1–2 minutes.
Verdict: IT WORKS GREAT. The peel will soften and slide off almost by itself. The disadvantage is that the garlic is then wet, which can be a problem when frying in oil (it will splatter).
Comparison of methods: Which one to choose?
Method Time Difficulty When to use it?

Shaking in bowls 20 s High (hand fatigue) When you are making a spread for 20 people.
Opening with a knife 2 s Low When cooking lunch regularly.
Hot water bath 2 min Zero When you need to peel a kilo of garlic for storage.
Microwave (10 s) 10 s Low Works, but the garlic will “cook” slightly and lose its sharpness.
💡 Bonus tip: How to get rid of the smell from your hands?
If you peeled garlic by hand and your fingers still “smell” the next day, soap won’t help, but stainless steel will.

Just rub your hands under running water on a stainless steel sink or a stainless steel spoon. The metal will react with the sulfur compounds in the garlic and the smell will disappear immediately. Pure chemistry in practice!

Would you like to know how to process garlic into a homemade paste that will last in the refrigerator all winter?

Peeling garlic is exactly the activity we all love… until our fingers get sticky and we have bits of peel under our nails.
