Garlic peels are a true treasure, as they contain a high concentration of quercetin (a powerful antioxidant) and substances with antibacterial properties.

I bet your grandmother used the peels in one of these three ways, legendary in Slovak folk medicine and gardening:

Elixir for Houseplants (and Cucumbers!)
If you mentioned those amazing cucumbers, garlic peels are the perfect complement.

Preparation: Pour 1 liter of hot water over a handful of peels and let it steep for 24 hours.

Effect: This infusion acts as a gentle yet effective natural fungicide. Sprayed on cucumber or houseplant leaves, it repels aphids and prevents mold growth.

Rejuvenating Tea or Infusion
You may have learned that garlic peels belong in broth or that they can be used to make tea.

Why? The quercetin in the peels promotes cell regeneration and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Tip: Next time you make Sunday soup, add the peels (in a cheesecloth or sieve) and remove them before serving. They give the broth a beautiful color and an extra dose of vitamins without altering the flavor.

Natural Insect Repellent for the Pantry
Sometimes, dried peels were stored in linen bags along with flour or legumes.

Effect: Their distinctive odor (which we barely notice, but insects do) reliably keeps pantry moths and other pests away. A little scientific bonus: Did you know that garlic peels contain up to 20 times more antioxidants than the clove itself? It’s essentially the plant’s protective shield, which we often throw away.

Did I happen to discover one of your grandmother’s recipes, or did she have other special tricks up her sleeve, for example for joint pain or for baking bread?

Grandmothers were masters of the “zero-waste economy” long before the term “zero waste” became fashionable.
