I have to stop you in a friendly way right at the beginning \u2013 this is one of those typical internet \u201ctech myths\u201d that sound magical, but in reality work completely differently (or not at all).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As your tech peer, I\u2019ll explain it to you straight: A paper clip in a USB port will not improve your Wi-Fi signal. You can even irreparably damage your device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A USB port is used to transfer data and electricity. A paper clip is a metal conductor. If you insert it into the port:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You short the pins: You connect the power pin (5V) to ground (GND) or the data pins.
You’ll destroy your motherboard: Modern computers and routers have short circuit protection, but they’re not all-powerful. You could blow up your USB controller or your entire motherboard.
This is not how an antenna works: Wi-Fi antennas must be precisely tuned to 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. A piece of random wire stuck into a USB port is not an antenna, it’s just a dangerous piece of metal.

If techies are “hiding” something, it’s not paper clips, but these simple physics facts that don’t cost you anything:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A router hidden in a closet, behind a TV, or in a corner near the ground loses up to 50% of its power.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Tip: Place your router in the center of your house and as high as possible (e.g. on a shelf). Wi-Fi waves spread downward and outward like light from a lamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
