The homemade trick that no one tells you about

It seems we’ve uncovered a secret that manufacturers of expensive degreasers don’t like to hear. If you’re getting ready for the 2026 grilling season, you don’t have to buy aggressive sprays that sting your eyes. The best solution is probably in your kitchen or pantry.

There are two homemade tricks that work almost instantly and cost literally a few cents.

Trick #1: Onion “miracle” (To clean the grill while it’s hot)
This trick is used by old grilling masters. Onions contain acids that react with grease when exposed to heat and release it.

Procedure: Heat the grill up really hot to crisp up any food residue. Cut a large onion in half. Stick a grill fork in it and use the cutting side to vigorously scrub the hot grate bars.
Result: The grime will start to come off, and the onion juice will also create a natural non-stick surface for the next piece of meat.

Trick #2: Foil + Vinegar (For Heavy Buildup)
If your grill is in a terrible state after the winter, this is the “heavyweight” solution.

How to: Crumple a piece of regular foil into a ball. Spray the grate with white vinegar (you can add a little baking soda for a fizzing effect). Then run the foil ball over the grate.
Why it works: Foil is hard enough to scrape away burnt-on food, but soft enough not to scratch the steel grate (unlike a wire brush, which can leave dangerous wires).
Comparison: Home Methods vs. Chemistry
Method Cost Risk Environmental Impact

Onion / Vinegar Negligible None (edible ingredients) Zero
Aluminum foil A few cents No loose wires Aluminum foil is recyclable
Commercial cleaner €5 – €15 Fumes, skin burns High (chemical waste)
How to clean the inside of a grill (container)?
If you have a gas or charcoal grill that has a build-up of grease on the walls, use a paste of baking soda and a little water.

Apply the paste to the walls.
Let it sit for at least 30 minutes (or overnight).
Spray with vinegar and watch the dirt “foam” out. Then just wipe with an old rag.
Gemini Safety Tip:
Never use steel brushes with thin bristles to clean the grate, as they break easily. Every year, hundreds of people end up in the hospital because they accidentally swallow a small metal wire left on their meat. Onions or aluminum foil are 100% safe in this regard.

Bonus tip: If you want your stainless steel grill to shine on the outside, polish it with a cloth with a few drops of baby oil or plain olive oil. It will look like it just came out of the box.

Do you have a grill that is extremely dirty, or are you wondering how to make a homemade marinade that will hardly stick to the grates?

It seems we’ve uncovered a secret that manufacturers of expensive degreasers don’t like to hear.
