This is one of the most famous kitchen tricks because, despite being incredibly simple, it’s based on a very concrete physical principle.

The trick you’re probably referring to is the wooden spoon trick.

The Wooden Spoon Trick
Simply place a wooden spoon crosswise over the open pot while the water (or pasta) is boiling.

Here’s why it works (without magic):

Breaking surface tension: Starch-laden water bubbles (which are what create the “explosive” foam) are unstable. When they touch the dry, rough surface of the wood, they immediately pop instead of accumulating.

Temperature difference: Wood is an insulator and stays much cooler than steam. When the hot foam touches the cold spoon, the steam condenses and returns to a liquid state, causing the bubble to “deflate.”
Other tricks to avoid disaster:
If you don’t have a wooden spoon handy, here are a couple of equally effective alternatives:

The ice trick: If you see the water about to overflow, toss an ice cube into the pot. This will instantly lower the temperature of the surface layer, stopping the foam from rising.
A drizzle of oil: Adding a teaspoon of oil to the pasta water helps break the surface tension of the starch bubbles, preventing them from forming a film that traps the steam.
The emergency “blow”: If you’re right there, a sharp blow on the foam will instantly deflate it (but it’s only a temporary solution!).

A word of warning
The spoon trick works great, but remember that wood can be damaged if left over hot steam for hours (it could warp or crack). Use it for those critical 10 minutes of pasta cooking!

Do you often find the water overflowing while cooking something specific, like rice or whole-wheat pasta, or were you just looking for confirmation of this culinary myth?

It really feels like we’re sailing through a sea of ”grandma’s secrets” today!
